FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Segway XTs set to roll on Angel Island Feb. 20, 2007 Angel Island has undergone many changes over several hundred years of use, and the addition of guided Segway tours is but the latest in a long list of unusual activities. Four daily, guided tours on off-road Segway XTs begin March 10. Miwok Indians were some of the island’s first inhabitance. It was used as a Chinese immigration station, ushering in a dark period in its history, and also by the United States military for defense, according to http://www.parks.ca.gov/ . Angel Island’s position at the mouth of San Francisco Bay, with unobstructed views of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, Marin County and the East Bay city of Oakland, made it ideal for defending the entire Bay Area, and visitors witness living history of that occupation through accessible hillside bunkers, aging storage buildings still sporting the words “dynamite” in faded paint, and even decommissioned Nike missile sites. Today the island is a peaceful, scenic tourist destination, offering up inspirational views of the Bay and what are described as “the best sunset photos of Golden Gate Bridge.” The quite, electric Segways cruise the island’s Perimeter Trail on four daily tours (www.segwayangelisland.com ) run by Segway of Oakland’s professional staff. “It’s one of the best places to ride a Segway because there are no cars allowed,” said tour operator Darren Romar. “It’s also good exercise, countering what many people think about it. After you go eight or nine miles you realize it’s not effortless, and you will feel it in your calves and shoulders, because you are getting exercise. “We stay to the paved areas on the tour, although a couple of short paths are a little challenging,” he added. “It’s a really fun way to spend a day at Angel Island, where the views are the best in the Bay Area.” Tour operator Steve Steinberg was surprised at the abundance of history within easy reach. “You’re looking at turn-of-the-century powder rooms, and right next to those are modern missile sites, so you see a full range of U.S. military technology right there, practically 200 years’ worth,” Steinberg noted. “The scenery, history and views make it the perfect place for a day trip.” Cost for the Segway Angel Island Experience is $65 per person (ages 14 and above only) with two-for-one specials offered on Tuesdays. Ferries to the island depart from Tiburon, San Francisco and Alameda/Oakland – for ferry schedules and to make tour reservations visit www.segwayangelisland.com or call 1-888-8SEGWAY. Organizers will host a barbecue event for Segway owners and media professionals on Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 1 p.m. on the island. A fleet of Segways will be on hand for media use. Cost to participate is a round-trip ferry ticket from one of the three departure locations listed above. Go to the website or call 1-888-8SEGWAY to RSVP.
